Black Americans of Achievement: Marcus Garvey

Black Americans of Achievement: Marcus Garvey
Brand Name: House of Consciousness
Item#/SKU: BAoA MG
Part of the Black Americans of Achievement, Vol. 2, this documentary looks at the life and work of black nationalist leader Marcus Garvey.

Garvey spent his life trying to inspire blacks to strive for a better life and to create their own power system separate from all other races.

From his birthplace in Jamaica, to Latin America, to London, Garvey spent his early adulthood trying to incite black workers to follow him and his beliefs.

In 1914, he returned to his homeland of Jamaica and formed the Universal Negro Improvement Association, which was created with the intent of forming a black-controlled nation in Africa. To gather more support, Garvey came to the United States and continued to grow as a controversial figure with his racial separatist views. Other black leaders in America, such as NAACP founder W.E.B. Du Bois, fervently disagreed with Garvey's take on race relations.
